shiprods
Shiprods is an ancient farmhouse to the north of the parish. The main drive to the house is a left turn off the Wheatsheaf Road, past the entrance to Chestham Park. The back of the house can be seen from the footpath which runs up past Chestham, past Nyman's and up to Shermanbury Place. The Grade II listing reads:
The original portion is a C16 or earlier timber-framed building with the timbering and red brick infilling exposed in the north wall but the west front is covered by a pentice. In the C18 the south and east fronts, of which the latter is the main front, were refaced with red brick. Stringcourse. Eaves cornice. Hipped Horsham slab roof. Glazing bars intact. Doorway with rectangular fanlight. Two storeys and attic. Three windows. Two gabled formers to north and south fronts. Late C17 or early C18 staircase inside.
Henry Burtenshaw, a brewer and farmer was listed as living at Shiprods in 1804. He died in 1838 in Ashurst. 52-year old Robert Stephens was a miller at Shiprods in 1841, and farmed 227 acres in 1851. In 1901, the occupant was a Miss Ann Mack, single, aged 47, born in Southwark and "living on own means".
