A guide to using the site
There are many ways to access the photographs and the information about the photographs on the site.
- Categories: The photographs on the website have been divided into Categories: Houses, the High Street, Streets, Shops, Country Views, Pubs, Churches and Miscellany. Individual subjects may appear in more than one category, depending on the aspect of the photograph. Click on a category to display a listing in grid form of all the photo pages in that category, numbered from 1 onwards. Then click on an item in the list to display a page of up to 10 thumbnail photographs, with captions. You can use the arrow buttons to go back and forth between pages.
- Photo List: Clicking on the Photo List menu button takes you to an A-Z list of nearly all the individual subjects covered by the website, with links to the various category pages in which their photographs appear. For example: Coopers Yard: Shops 11, Streets 10. Clicking on either of those links displays the relevant page of thumbnails and captions relating to the link.
- Photograph pages: Once you have reached a page of thumbnail photographs - by one of the routes above - you have two choices: (1) Click on a thumbnail to display the photograph in a larger size (2) Click on the caption below the thumbnail to display the relevant topic page of information about the subject - including all the other pages on which photographs of that subject appear.
- Shop names: Shops come and go, but buildings remain more static. In order to achieve some consistency in showing changes to shops (and some houses) over the years, I have often used the original name of a building as the main name for index purposes. So, for example, I have used Clock House for a building which, over the years, has accommodated many businesses.
Don't forget to click on the Documentation link and take a peek at the Census Data and Directories pages, which give a fascinating view of the people of the village at various times in its history.
Please note: The site is always under development and the priority is to update it with photographs of the village and environs. For that reason, some of the descriptive information in the topic pages may lag slightly behind in getting written.
