southdown HOUSE
Southdown House has housed the Southdown Galleries gift shop for nearly 30 years and stands between the Henfield Club and Alan Woodward's butcher's shop at the south-west side of the High Street. In 1901, the occupant was 66-years old butcher Richard Martin. In 1948 Southdown House was still a butcher's shop, run by Mr. A.E. Baker, after which it became an antiques shop, a hairdressers and other businesses.

Southdown House 1: In this photograph the shop has two entrances and the shop name repeated over each door.
Southdown House 2: Entrance has now been restricted to the door on the right, and the sign above the door has been painted out.
Southdown House 3: A photograph from 2015, with a repaint and no name as yet - but still Southdown Galleries. Rita, the owner, pointed out marks still faintly visible on the inside of the small square window at the top of the building - a memento of the crossed tape stuck inside the panes during World War 2 as protection against possible flying glass.
