new hall
New Hall, in Small Dole, was the site of the Bishop's manorial court and is first mentioned in 1560. The greater part of the present house dates from 1620, when it was owned by a London surgeon called Prosper Rainford. The modern look of the house arises from rebuilding made in the 1840s by Eardley Nathaniel Hall, a Brighton Banker, who was the occupant in 1841. The occupant in 1851 was 23-year old farmer Richard Rolfe Verrall from Iford, who farmed 410 acres. In the 1940s, it was the home of archaeologist Sir Leonard Woolley, who discovered ancient Ur. Twenty years later, I worked with his ex-wife in the library of Lancaster University.
The house stands at the western end of New Hall Lane, on the left before the lane does a right turn to the north. It was owned by Norman and Marjorie Carreck, editor and co-author respectively of Henfield: A Sussex Village.

New Hall: A photo from 2019, kindly taken and sent to me by the present owners, who write, "The main change is the emergence of the building to the left (south) of the house. That building was the gardener's cottage and part of the New Hall estate, but it was sold off in the 1980's. It was then enlarged by new owners who added an extra story in the 1990's." The current occupants purchased the house in 2012.
