Moustows Manor
Moustows stands at the southern end of the High Street, near Golden Square. The name possibly derives from the Saxon words "moot stow", a court of justice for the hundred - an area of Stretham Manor. It became a private school for girls - Poplar House School, run by the Misses Martin - in the 1860s. There was once a row of poplar trees in front of the house, and you can see these in the 1836 painting of the High Street (High Street 11) on the Streets 2 page.
In 1901 the occupant of Moustows Manor was 67-year old retired Lt. General Benjamin Gordon, together with his wife and family. Also in the house - listed as a separate household - was his housekeeper, 49-year old widow Fanny Browning and her daughter - also Fanny.
