MOOLTAN COTTAGE
Mooltan Cottage, built in the 1840s, lies in Nep Town Road, halfway between Broomfield Road and Blackgate Lane, and adjacent to Fern Cottage. In 1871 the occupants were 45-year old agricultural labourer Henry Stealaway, his wife Ellen and their niece Mary Mansell. Henry was there in 1891, this time listed as Stillaway. The original cottage is the left half of the building as seen from Neptown Road, with the right half of the "L" shape built on in the 1970s. It was, for a time, 2 separate flats, but is now a single residence.
It is probable that the name of the house comes from the Siege of Multan, which was a prolonged contest between the city and state of Multan and the British East India Company. The siege lasted between 19 April 1848, when a rebellion in the city against a ruler imposed by the East India Company precipitated the Second Anglo-Sikh War, and 22 January 1849, when the last defenders surrendered.
