london house & kebab knight
London House is now two business - Kebab Knight and London House - both takeaway fast food premises. For many years the building was home to generations of clock and watchmakers. It was built in the 1850s by Thomas Stevens, a clock and watch maker, and stayed mainly with this usage until 1987, when a Vietnamese family took over the premises. The premises then were split into two as at the present.

The Cramp family of clock makers occupied the building from the 1880s to the turn of the century. 28-year old William Alliss from Tonbridge in Kent occupied part of the building as a watchmaker in 1901, and a 72-year old army pensioner named Charles Naldrett occupied the other part. The Funnell family - Douglas and his son Robin - took over the premises from John Alliss in 1933, leaving it in 1987.

D. Funnell (London House): A picture of the shop from 1984, when the Funnell family still used the premises for watchmaking.

London House poster: Sent to me by Adrian Vieler, this is a poster advertising a change of ownership of the London House business. Mr. Jury Cramp was born in 1847 and was living in Horsham in 1901. He was listed as resident in Henfield in 1905, which brackets the date of the poster to within a 4-year time frame... It seems that the business was in someone else's hand for a time, as the poster mentions the shop being re-opened by Cramp after occupation by a Mr. H.T. Milward. Good to know that you could buy concertinas and ironmongery as well as jewellery... Jury Cramp died in Horsham in 1937 - a good innings.
