HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

little betley

On either side of the Downs Link, off Stonepit Lane, stand two farmhouses - Great Betley to the west, and Little Betley to the east. Little Betley is a listed Grade II attractive old farmhouse - easily reached by a lane from the Downs Link. The Grade II listing reads:

C17 or earlier I-shaped timber-framed building with red brick infilling and a portion added wholly in brick at the end of the south wing. Tiled roof. Casement windows. Two storeys. Three windows.

In 1841 the house was occupied by  44-year old William Woolgar, an agricultural labourer who was also there in 1851. Two families lived at the house in 1871 and 1881 - those of John Fains or Fairs and Henry Nye in 1871 - and of John Fains/Fairs and William Pierce, all agricultural labourers, in 1881. In 1891 the sole family was that of Benjamin Parsons, wife Mary and their four children. In 1901, 41-year old Stephen Matthews - "Feeder, Threshing Machine" - lived there. Two families occupied the house in 1911 - that of cowman Harry Berrett, and that of William Linwood - a farm labourer.

HOUSES 2

Little Betley: The farmhouse in 2005. I think another photo, without intervening cars, will be called for in the future - just to show the frontage of the house.

Little Betley 1 & 2: These two black & white photographs show Little Betley in 1876.

HOUSES 70

Little Betley 1: A view of the back of Little Betley from mid-November 2019. The land around it had been cleared  - probably for drainage purposes - giving a good view of the structure. The eastern section of the house is the earlier part, as shown by the brickwork.

Little Betley 2: A similar view to the one above, but taken from further back.
