HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

king james lane

Henfield lies on a greensand ridge overlooking the South Downs, and there are two footpaths that traverse the ridge on the west and south of the village centre. To the south lies the Lydds; to the west is King James Lane, which starts at the top of Barrow Hill, runs through the Springhills complex, becomes a footpath skirting the Rothery Field, and ends as a lane at South View Terrace.

STREETS 15

King James Lane: This photo from 2016 shows that part of the lane which runs along to South View, with houses on either side.

COUNTRY VIEWS 18

King James Lane 1: One of the pleasures of Henfield is that you can walk out of the village centre and, in just a minute or two, seem to be in the heart of the countryside, miles from anywhere. This view of King James Lane shows it as a wide track running up from the ridge towards Springhills and Barrow Hill. A photo from mid-May 2017.

King James Lane 2: This photo from mid-May 2017 shows the lane as a footpath skirting the southern edge of the Rothery Field, which lies behind the hedge.

King James Lane 3: Here is the start of King James Lane, at its junction with Barrow Hill. Mid-May 2017.
