faircox cottages
The buildings now named nos. 1 and 2 Faircox Cottages date from around 1540. The house on the left - No. 2 - was the original cottage, and what is now No. 1 was probably a barn and was modernised in the 20th century. So, although they look somewhat similar from the outside, the interiors are quite different in style and character.
In 1841 the occupants of Faircox were Richard Browning, an agricultural labourer, and his family. In 1851, Faircox was still occupied by Richard Browning, his wife Sarah, their son and his mother - and by 60-year old agricultural labourer Thomas Tidey and his family. In 1861 and 1871, they were occupied by two families - Moses Dale,a 39/49-year old shepherd, his wife Ellen and their four children - and the Brownings were still there. It was the the home of the Dale and Stringer families - agricultural labourers - in 1881. In 1891, two different families lived in Faircox: a 25-year old gardener called Ernest Hills, his wife Harriett and daughter; and 40-year old shepherd Charles Farncombe from "Piecombe", wife Sarah and their eight children. In 1901, two different families lived at Faircox. 54-year old James Smith, a plate layer and his family lived there; also 57-year old Noah Browning, a market gardener and his family.
Faircox Lane is a left turn off Upper Station Road, after the roundabout at the junction with Broomfield Road.
