HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

Eardly hall institute

This shop has been many things over the years before being a butcher's and then a nail spa. The building dates from 1880 and was originally the "Rainbow Temperance Hotel and Coffee House. In 1891, the Coffee House Keeper was 69-year old Henry Chapman, with his wife Jane and their two grandchildren. In 1901 the manager was 39-year old Edward Brackless. It became the Eardley Hall Memorial Institute, which housed the village library for some years - the institute being named after Eardley N. Hall, a local banker who once lived at the now demolished Barrow Hill House.

Woodwards butchers was a fixture in the High Street for over 40 years and proudly bore the sign "Champion of Champions Sausage Maker" in the window. The shop closed as a butcher's in January 2018. The upstairs premises have been converted into two flats, and the ground floor was empty until December 2018, when it became a nail spa..
