Broadmere Common
Broadmere Common lies south-west of the village, to the west of Barrow Hill, and footpaths run though it south and west to the River Adur and New Hall Lane. Ponds on the common are often the result of clay being dug out for brick making, and there are records of brickyards on both Oreham and Broadmere commons in the 18th and 19th centuries. Pond House in Dagbrook Lane was originally called Kiln Cottage.

Broadmere Common 1: This sunny autumn view shows a portion of the footpath from Dagbrook Lane through the common, which meanders through fields and past clay ponds.
Broadmere Common 2: Strictly speaking, this is a photograph of the cottages at the foot of Barrow Hill - looking south - but the original photograph was titled "Broadmere Common" and this is how it's presented here. The photo might have been taken in the 1920s, but this is just a guess. What is clear is that this area of the local country was more open then than today, without hedges and fences.
Broadmere Common 3: A view of the cottages at Barrow Hill taken from a footpath running south across Broadmere Common. One of the ponds dug for clay can be seen in the middle distance.
Broadmere Common 4: An uncertain view of Broadmere Common - where exactly it was taken from and exactly where it is looking to, I can't say.
Broadmere Common 5: This scene looks over the basketmakers cottages on Barrow Hill across to Broadmere Common, and was taken from the Lydds.
