woods mill house
This is the miller's house at the Woods Mill watermill - now owned by the Sussex Wildlife Trust. The photo was taken from the bottom of the garden in an area marked "Private", so ask at the front desk for permission to see it from this view! In 1851 the miller was 59 year old widower Jonathan Botting - born in Washington in Sussex - who lived there with his miller son Michael. George Holman, aged 48 in 1861, was the miller in both 1861 and 1871 and lived there with his wife Mary Ann. In 1881 the Master Miller was 25-year old Burgess Daniel Athings from Suffolk, the employer of two men.
In 1901, the miller at the mill was 32-year old Caleb J. Coote with his two brothers, 30-year old Edward, also a miller, and George, a carpenter. W.H. In 1891 and 1911, the miller was Caleb's father, Charles Coote. The family had other interests and, in 1901, Charles was farming in Tottington. Chaplin lived at Woods Mill in the 1940s and excavated the lake which is fed by the mill stream.
