HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

violet nurseries

The nursery was started in 1905 by Misses Allen and Brown on the western end of Henfield Common. They ladies lived in Holmgarth (now Providence Cottage) and the adjacent Lavender Cottage was used as a workroom. Plants were grown in the field and covered with bell-shaped glasses.

MISCELLANY 1

Violet Nurseries: This little b&w photo shows Lavender Cottage on the left and Holmgarth on its right, and is probably from around 1900.

MISCELLANY 21

Violet Nurseries: Another b&w photo from around 1900, showing the nursery glasshouses behind the flint wall and the houses to their left. The glasshouse area has now been built on - by the house called Newtimber.
