steam mill
The former Steam Mill on Lower Station Road was built around 1872, after the advent of the railway brought a plentiful supply of coal to the village. It stopped being a mill around 1900 when much larger local mills became too competitive. It has had various uses since then, including being a coachworks, a factory for water purifiers, a medicine pill factory during WW2, a depot for the Southern Counties Agricultural Supplies (S.C.A.T.S.) and, for 30 years up until 1992, a furniture depository for Wardens removal firm. Building contractors used the building, and Braziers garage services are behind it, to one side. The premises are currently occupied by "Simon Benjamin Furniture Ltd" - who craft bespoke kitchens and furniture by hand, using traditional joinery methods and high quality materials.
