HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

station road

Station Road takes its name from the railway station that used to stand where Beechings stands today. It runs from Upper Station Road, across from the Cat & Canary, down to the junction of Hollands Lane and Lower Station Road.

STREETS 1

Station Road: By 1966, Dr. Beeching axed many railway lines, including the Horsham to Shoreham line which ran through Henfield. A road with houses - called Beechings - was built over the station, and the track and various embankments were demolished and flattened out. This photo - taken from some amateur 8mm film by Jack Wickham - shows some of the earthworks being carried out at the bottom of Station Road, near the Steam Mill. And, yes, those are children playing in the rubble - not so much health & safety in those days!

STREETS 9

Station Road: This modern photo from 2015 shows the houses and the road running from Upper Station Road down to Lower Station Road. The station was two thirds of the way down, on the right in the photograph.
