HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

st. peter's cottage

St. Peter's Cottage stands at the corner of Church Walk and Church Terrace. From 1913 to the mid-1940s, it was lived in by Nurse Wooller, the district nurse and midwife for the village. Its Grade II listing describes it as:

C17 or earlier timber-framed building with the timbering and plaster infilling exposed
on north wall but refronted with red brick and grey headers on ground floor and
tile-hung above. Small gable in centre. Steeply-pitched hipped tiled roof. Casement
windows. Two storeys. Four windows.

The cottage was actually established before the nearby Cat House, and parts of it date back to the 14th century. Nurse Wooller had a lean-to erected at the side of the cottage for her patients to sit in  while waiting to see her. This was later demolished and an extension added to the house. The back garden contained a swimming pool at one point, but this has now been filled in and is a seating area.
