HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

rus house

Rus House is a fine Georgian house standing near Golden Square on the east side of Henfield High Street, in between the forge and Magnolia House. In 1901, the house - listed as Russ House - was the home of 63-year retired grocer and draper Samuel Tobitt and family, which included 28-year old single daughter Ada Tobitt. Ada was the last member of the Tobitt family to live in Rus House - until her death in 1969. The listing describes it as:

Two storeys and semi-basement with area. Four windows. Stuccoed, semi-baseme
rusticated. Overhanging eaves. Slate roof. Glazing bars intact. Venetian shutters.
Iron balconettes and tent-shaped canopies to ground floor windows. Round-healed
doorway with fluted quarter columns, semi-circular fanlight and six panel door.
Porch of solid type with rudimentary pediment has been added over this. Garage
door at north end.
