HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

Richwards and others

The building currently occupied by Richwards estate agents has had a chequered history. It is a 1970s building standing on the corner of Coopers Way and the High Street. It housed two wine merchants businesses before becoming an estate agency.

SHOPS 1

Unwins 1: Unwins Wine Merchant occupied the building for many years. This picture shows it standing empty and for sale around 2006. Richwards is next door.

Unwins 2: Unwins in full working order in the 1990s.

Unwins 3: Another view from 2006 of the empty Unwins - taken from the corner of the Evangelical Church wall.

World of Wine 1: After being sold by Unwins, a Storrington wine merchants called World of Wine decided to buy it and open it as its Henfield branch. The new manager had been in charge of the Henfield branch of the Wine Rack before it moved from Caudle Street to Commercial Buildings. This picture shows it just after its opening - from the same camera viewpoint as the Unwins 3 photo above.

World of Wine 2: This photo shows the new World of Wine from the High Street. The new shop sold higher quality, more expensive - and tellingly - fewer varieties of wine than the old Unwins. It lost money and tried to cut its losses by installing a delicatessen counter, which also failed to inspire customers. It closed within 3 years.

World of Wine 3: Here are the premises in 2009 - empty again. Richwards took over the premises and, for a time had both shops in the building.

Richwards 1: The premises as they look now. After occupying both sets of premises for some months, Richwards vacated the right-hand set which are now occupied by the Jam Pot.

Richwards 2: The same viewpoint as above from the corner of the Evangelical Chapel.
