HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

PROSPECT COTTAGE

As you look south down the High Street towards Golden Square, 18th century Prospect Cottage stands directly in front of you, with Chatfields on the left and Ganders on the right. It's a lovely house in an awkward position with traffic from three roads converging by its front door. Ann Gander a single woman aged 57 and of independent means, lived there in 1861. The occupant in 1871 and 1881 was retired butcher William Gregory and his wife Susan. In 1901, 65-year old Richard Pattenden - 'living on own means' - with his wife Harriet and 7-year old daughter.

The house was originally a forge, and has a cellar which had a byre in it for animals. The byre may well date from the time when William Gregory lived there. Other than this and some census information, very little is known of the history of the house.
