POTWELL
Potwell was originally a farmhouse, built about 1600, and is known for being the home of William Borrer, a local botanist. Lesser-known is the fact that it was also the home of J.B. Morton - known as "Beachcomber" - who wrote a column in the "Daily Express" for many years. In 1871 the occupants were 60-year old widower Thomas Davidson his sister, his son and several servants. Thomas Davidson had no occupation - obviously a wealthy man. The house is on the left-hand side as you walk west from the High Street to the end of Cagefoot Lane with the Tanyard pond on your right. Potwell is a Grade II* Listed Building. The listing reads:
C17 or earlier. Double L-shaped timber-framed building with plaster and red brick infilling. Gable end to each wing. Horsham slab roof. Casement windows. Crow-stepped chimney breast on each wall of north wing. Behind this a projection has been added in C18 at right angles to north wing. Two storeys. Four windows.
