old mill house
Mill End becomes Dropping Holms, and Sandy Lane runs south from that junction. A windmill once stood near here, and the Old Mill House sits in the corner where Mill End joins Sandy Lane. The mill itself was built in 1724 and was blown down in the early 1900s. Sandpits were dug and eventually worked out by the 1940s. The miller in the mill house in 1851 was James Trusler who was born in Bolney and lived there with wife Lucy, born in Cuckfield, and their daughter Ellen. His assistants, two brothers called John and William Gatford of Cuckfield, also lived in the house - perhaps brothers of Lucy.
