nep town road
Nep Town is possibly a corruption of "up town", though the outlook from the end of Weavers Lane - where it joins King James's Lane - is known as the Nab. The road runs west from the end of the High Street until it becomes Mill End, then Dropping Holms, then Lower Station Road, finally ending as Hollands Lane. The old workhouse, now converted into cottages, and the old infants' school (which then became a Youth Club) also stand in Nep Town Road.

Nep Town Road 1: This black & white photo from the 1910s shows a viewpoint from the former Gardeners Arms, with the house called Cutler's Croft on the left of the picture and Love Lane - now Blackgate Lane - receding into the distance. Blackgate Lane is in two sections these days, with the roadway running up to the Edwardian houses on the right, and a narrow footpath continuing on to Cagefoot Lane. The wooden gate in Love Lane in this photo has long gone, and was a gate into Red Oaks property.
Nep Town Road 2: This building shows the end wall of the old workhouse, now converted into cottages, and the row of houses which were first a school and then the village youth club for some years.
Nep Town Road 3: A 2005 view from the corner of Blackgate Lane showing the houses in between the then youth club and the former Gardener's Arms. The house to the left of the Gardener's is Woodville, followed by Nos. 1 & 2 New Cottage.
Nep Town Road 4: A view from the corner of Nep Town Road and Hewitts, showing the stretch of road from the Rothery playing field to the Gardener's Arms. The old workhouse (Cedar View) is in the foreground, and you can just make out the "sold" sign on the youth club, which subsequently became houses.
Nep Town Road 5: These houses are on the north-east section of Nep Town Road, running up to Hewitts. They are, from left to right: Southways, St. Helens, Beggars Roost and Cranley.
Nep Town Road 6: This view down Nep Town Road towards the Gardeners Arms was taken from just past the Nep Mission. The fence of Ivybank is on the left, with the entrance to Vinalls yard on the right. The wall of the white house to the left centre is that of Fern Cottage.
