Miscellany 9 - notes
Photos on this page were taken in February and March 2016.
Sunset: Another of those occasional evenings - particularly in winter months - when the combination of cloud cover, setting sun and atmosphere produces vivid, glowing sunsets. This is just such a one from February.
Gas main machinery: Church Street was pitted with large holes in March as new joints were being fitted to gas pipes. I don't know what this piece of machinery is for, but it looks impressive. Croft Villas is on the extreme right of the picture, and the white house behind the machinery is the west wall of Martyn Lodge.
Woodard plaque: As the plaque by the main door of Martyn Lodge in Church Street says, (Canon) Nathaniel Woodard lived there from 1862 to 1891. Woodard (21 March 1811 – 25 April 1891) was a priest in the Church of England. He founded 11 schools for the middle classes in England whose aim was to provide education based on "sound principle and sound knowledge, firmly grounded in the Christian faith". His educational principles are promoted today through the Woodard Corporation, a registered charity. One of the schools founded by him is Lancing College.
Easter cross: Placed in the High Street outside Barclay's Bank and photographed in late March 2016 - church unknown.
Village map: This map of the village stands on the pavement outside the dry cleaners. Photographed in April 2016.
Village notice board: This is fastened to the back wall of the bus shelter on the west side of the High Street, and is open to flyers and posters from anyone in the village. Photographed in April 2016.
Deer Park play area: Walk out of the Medical Centre car park towards Deer Park and this children's play area is directly opposite, across the road. Photographed in April 2016.
