Miscellany 12 - notes
Classic cars: These three classic cars, two of which are a Mercedes Sports and a Rolls-Royce, stood in an open garage in the grounds of a house out in the countryside to the west of the village. Photographed in late May 2016.
NEPTOWN MILL
This windmill was located 60-70 yards west of Windmill Lane and, like its neighbour on Henfield Common, was a post-mill - also unusually painted black. The location was an ancient one, and a map of 1724 indicates a mill on this site. The mill was owned and run by members of the Vinall family, by Jonathan Botting from 1838 to 1858, and by George Holman from 1866 to 1870. The last miller was listed as Clement Knight, who ran it from 1874-78. There was a miller listed in Neptown in 1881, and he was 48-year old John Sharp who had a wife called Fanny and five sons. The mill blew down in a storm in 1908.
Neptown mill 1: A photograph taken in 1883 - probably from Windmill Lane.
Neptown mill 2: This photo dates from 1900 and shows the mill in a state of decay, with shutters missing from the sweeps and a general look of neglect.
Neptown mill 3: The mill in 1908 - blown over by a gale.
