Miscellany 10 - notes
High Street seat: This metal seat stands outside the Jam Pot bric-a-brac shop on the east side of the High Street, next to Norton House. A photo, like those below, from early May 2016.
High Street seat plaque: A close-up of the plaque on the seat mentioned above, with its dedication to Ione Whittome. The Whittome family owned Gill Orchard and were well known in parish and church affairs. The plaque dates the seat - 1967.
Fire engine: The station doors were just opening as I strolled past - just in time to photograph this engine. Note the hanging baskets on either side of the doors.
Private notice: This green and white monstrosity rears its ugly head about 200 yards along Furner's Lane - perhaps the residents further up the lane clubbed together to put it up. It demonstrates how the spirit and atmosphere of the old village is being changed by "incomers" who seem to want to make a part of the village exclusively their own. Contrary to what the the notice says or implies, Furner's Lane is a public right-of-way, with large vans and some lorries regularly driving down it (though there is no through access to Blackstone for motor traffic), and there are several turning places well past the sign.
Lydds seat - Horace White: There are a number of seats to rest yourself as you stroll along the Lydds from the back of Mill House along to Lydds House and Holedean Farm. Many of them are memorials to the White family, who have farmed at Holedean for generations. Horace White lived from 1902-1996.
Lydds seat - Thomas Milne: The Milnes - Thomas, Alice and daughter Christine - lived at Mill House for thirty years.
Thomas Milne plaque: The dedication on the Milne seat.
Lydds seat - White family: As well as the seat in memory of Harry White, two stone tablets on the bank behind the seat are memorials to other members of the family.
Harry White plaque: The dedication on the Harry White seat.
Goats at Swains: As it says - goats at Swains Farm shop, enjoying the spring sunshine.
