HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

london roAD & manor way

When the High Street meets Church Street and Furner's Lane at the north end, it becomes London Road, continuing up to Cowfold. Just outside the village centre, running parallel with London Road - on the right-hand side of the street - runs Manor Way. This is on the western fringe of the Wantley Manor estate.

The house with the tiled gable end on the left of the photo is Mermaid House, followed by no.7 London Road - the white house. After that comes Orchard House, the home and business of Tim Clark, clockmaker, with April Cottage set back slightly on its right. The end of this stretch of houses consists of Michaelmas Cottage and Flint Cottage - the latter being the village chip shop in the 1970s.
