LEECHES
Leeches is in that part of West End Lane which turns south and runs down parallel with the river Adur. A footpath runs east from the side of the house and joins up with the west half of Hollands Lane. In 1841, it was lived in by the Lelliott family, who worked as bargemen. In 1851 and 1861, Henry Emsley, his wife and daughters occupied Leeches, and two families named Emsley lived there in 1871. Thomas Payne, a bargeman, also separately lived in Leeches in 1851, with wife Sophia, who was born in Sevenoaks. In 1881, it was occupied by retired builder, 44-year old George Walls and his wife and three children.
In 1901 the house was occupied by 27-year old market gardener Frederick Keywood and his family.
