High Street (68-71)
HIGH STREET 8
High Street 68: A black & white view of the High Street from 1959, taken around noon. The photo was taken from just outside Hamfelds, and the view down the right-hand side is almost identical to today. By contrast, the left-hand side shows us that Croft House was Barclays Bank. Where JD Cleaners/ex-Barclays Bank now stands was a doctor's surgery called Woodlawn - the roof is just visible behind the trees. Note the "rural" nature of the kerbside...
High Street 69: A black & white view from 1949, showing a view north and east from just outside what is now Coopers Way. The Plough and the Free Church are the only buildings on the east side of the street still more or less as they were. The buildings to the left of the church are now the modern Setfords solicitors and Al-Badar's barbers, and the old block which once housed Budgens has gone, to be replaced by the modern One Stop building. No toilets, note - just a a brick wall. The shadows show that this was taken in the early evening.
High Street 70: An evening photo from 1949 again, and a view south and east from the forge. The east side is completely recognisable, but the Setyres and Ocean Drive premises have taken over the west side.
High Street 71: Sent to me by Kevin Wright, this shows part of the High Street in the 1970s. It's probably the late '70s as I can certainly recall Tobitts being in that location in 1976 and 1977.
