High Street (31-39)
HIGH STREET 4
High Street 31: Highclere and Thorndene stand in between Myrtle House and Highdene and currently house Truffles (Highclere) and BetFred (Thorndene). In this photo from 1997, BetFred has yet to appear and the business on the premises is the Alliance & Leicester Building Society. The branch closed in 2005, two years before the Society was taken over by Santander in 2007.
High Street 32: A view of the Assembly Rooms and the High Street in 1997. Stevens is still there, but the present Age UK was the Henfield Cyclist at that time.
High Street 33: A view of Croft House and the north-east High Street from 1997
High Street 34: Cruttenden's corner in 1997. Alan Jarman's solicitors has now gone and has been replaced by King Fish.
High Street 35: The High Street from Southdown Galleries northwards in 1997.
High Street 36: This view of the street shows what is now Henfield Furnishings, but was then - I believe - Avery's, next door to Lloyds Pharmacy. The building had been painted a dark brown.
High Street 37: The northern end of the High Street in 1870. The Plough is on the right of the picture and the old houses are where they used to stand at Cruttenden's Corner.
High Street 38: This photo from 1890 shows Samuel Tobitt and his wife outside the door of their shop in the High Street. This building and the one on its left are now the site of the present-day Budgens. The house shadow falling across the High Street (another evening photo with the sun in the west) is that of Claremont Villa, the present Henfield Club.
High Street 39: A photo of the upper west end of the High Street, looking towards London Road, on the 12th March, 2016. The green, white & red decoration is for the "Piazza Italia" show on the following day - a display of Italian cars and food stalls in the car park.
High Street 40: Looking north west from the Post Office (Clarence House) past Village Care (Mountain Ash House) to NatWest and the edge of Jasmine House. Taken in April 2016.
