The High Street (11-20)
HIGH STREET 2
High Street 11: A naive painting looking south down the High Street to Golden Square from, or depicting a scene from 1836. The building on the left behind the row of trees is the George. The square building on the right was the pound keeper's cottage, and the pound is shown behind it, to the right of the cart. The big house in the far distance is Barrow Hill House, built for William Borrer in 1811 and was demolished in the 1950s.
High Street 12: A photo from the 1990s showing the Elizabethan brickwork of the side of Greenfield House, just past the end of the George on the right-hand side of the photo. The view is from the corner of the Club in Cagefoot Lane looking south to Golden Square.
High Street 13: A view from the traffic lights outside Caudle Street, looking north to the end of the High Street. The pet supplies shop on the right-hand side of the picture is now St. Barnabas' charity shop.
High Street 14: This was taken from outside Budgen's supermarket looking north-west past Myrtle House, Truffles bakery and the then just sold Alliance & Leicester Building Society building. This is now the Betfred bookmaker's business. Lloyds Bank can be seen at the right-hand side of the photograph.
High Street 15: Another view similar to High Street 14 but further to the east, showing Budgen's wall.
High Street 16: A view looking north from outside Stokes the newsagent on the west side of the street. On the right, part of the George, Lloyds Pharmacy and Henfield Furnishings.
High Street 17: This has the same viewing angle as High Street 15 but further north, showing Woodward's butchers, Pump House and the former Assembly Rooms on the corner of Park Road.
High Street 18: Further north and looking east again - Village Care, NatWest bank and the shops in Jasmine House. The Henfield Tavern - formerly the Bell and the Raven - and latterly the Bell again, is at the end of the High Street. Barnard's Bakery, on the corner of London Road and Church Street ("Cruttenden's Corner") is in the distance.
High Street 19: The edge of Jasmine House, then London House and the then Henfield Tavern (now Henfield Funeral Services), then Cruttenden's Corner.
High Street 20: Another view similar to High Street 12.
