the golden hen

The Golden Hen stands in between Forges and Challens at the south-east end of the High Street, in Golden Square. The house was a chocolate and sweet shop for many years, and has retained the shop front and the name sign. This block of houses from Part Forges southwards, but excluding Challens on the corner, is set back from the High Street by a kind of lay-bye. The Grade II listing for the Golden Hen reads:

C18 front to a probably older house. Two storeys. Four windows. Painted brick. Tiled roof. Glazing bars intact on first floor. Modern shop front below.
