The gardeners arms
The Gardeners Arms was originally called the Toad and Effet. It was eventually bought by Enterprise Inns - one of the so-called pub companies which are really property companies - and sold in 2010 for housing and offices. It was the first of the six pubs in the village to close, followed by the Bell in 2014. The pub was a Bass Charrington house and very popular in its day. The forced breakup of the brewers' monopoly on pub ownership, brought about by Thatcher, led to the formation of the new pub/property companies and the gradual death of many of England's pubs through greed.
