HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

DUFFIES

My guess is that Duffies was originally part of Hacketts. Three households lived in Hacketts in 1881: 24-year old Alice Ward and her three brothers, together with schoolmistress Emily Naish; 86-year old John Harmen and his son and two daughters - all unmarried; and John Ward, a carpenter, with his wife and 4 children. The cottages lie north and east of the church, adjoining the churchyard. There was a fourth living area in Hacketts in 1881, but it was empty. Since this photograph was taken, the owners of Hacketts have purchased Duffies - the fence separating the two houses has been taken down, and the two houses are now one dwelling, with a smaller house on the extreme left.
