Henfield Then And Now

Cruttenden's corner

Many years ago the bakery on the corner of the High Street and Church Street was a business called Cruttenden's Bakery. Then Dunford's and Barnard's bakery businesses stood on the site now occupied by All Things Covered - but the corner is known to long-term residents of the village as Cruttenden's Corner.

Cruttenden's Corner
: This view shows the corner with Barnard's in the centre of the picture. To the right of Barnards is Alan Jarman's - now King Fish - and Radmall's Funeral Services. The white building running down Church Street from the front of Barnard's shop is the bakery itself.

Cruttenden's Corner: These old houses were pulled down to make way for what became Cruttenden's, Dunfords, Barnard's and All Things Covered. Church Street runs off to the left in this photo from 1870. These buildings were demolished in the 1880s.
