CROFT HOUSE
Croft House was originally the home and business premises of Henfield solicitor Charles Anthony Wade. In 1891 and 1901 he was living there with wife Sarah and their children. In the early years of the 20th century the upstairs part of the house was taken up with the village telephone exchange - with switchboard operators - before the automatic exchange was built in Cooper's Way in the 1960s. It was the premises of Barclays Bank before the present Barclays building was erected across the way, and was, for many years, the home of the Henfield branch of Lloyds Bank. The bank floor is currently empty, and a solicitor's business, housed on the upper floor, is destined to move to its other premises in Hassocks.
