chatfields
16th century Chatfields stands just off Golden Square, next to Prospect Cottage, on the road to Brighton. The occupant in 1841 was 40-year old cooper James Gratwick. In 1851 the house was occupied by two families: 34-year old gardener Daniel Buckwell from Plumpton and his wife Mary from Hurstpierpoint; and 33-year old coachman Joseph Townsend from Cricklade in Wiltshire and his wife Elizabeth from Newhaven. In 1901 the occupiers were 43-year old George Maslin, a gardener and his wife Elizabeth as one household - and 53-year old coachman Thomas Mundy.
The original farmhouse - another Henfield "hall" house - was built c. 1548. The chimney and north extensions were added around 1630, and other additions were made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Grade II listing reads:
C17 or earlier L-shaped timber-framed building with plaster and red brick infilling. Tiled roof. Casement windows. One bay added in red brick at north end of north wing with scalloped gable end. Gabled porch in angle of the L.
