HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

CHATES

Chates is a farmhouse just south-west of Great Betley, and reached by a footpath that runs from Stonepit Lane to the river. Thomas Goacher, agricultural labourer, lived there in 1871, 1881 and 1891 with wife Charlotte and their children. In 1901, it was occupied by Luther Baldwin, aged 48, described as a River Labourer (Dock).
