challens
In the latter years of the 19th century and early years of the 20th, William Challen was the Relieving Officer and Registrar of Births and Deaths. He and his son John after him lived in the last house on the south-east side of the High Street, in Golden Square at the junction with the Brighton road. The house is called Challens, and the junction has long been known as Challen's Corner.

Challens: This photo, taken in the summer of 2015, shows the house at the junction with the Brighton road, with a view of the common in the distance and the wall of Chatfields to the right. Wooden posts prop up the overhang of the first floor at the corner of the house and some posts bravely attempt to deflect the traffic turning left from the High Street. Like Prospect Cottage across the road, the house had been up for sale several times some years ago.

Challens: The owner of the house discovered this World War 2, keyhole shaped construction while digging in the back garden. With the soil dug away and the brickwork cleaned, the steps led down to a circular construction - either a communications post or lookout post. The soil has now been replace and the sides built up. The photo is a composite of those taken at the time of the dig.
