caudle street
In 1881, 41-year old surgeon Adolphus Caudle lived with his widowed mother in Elm Lodge in the High Street - premises now shared by a hairdressing salon and a charity shop - and his name is remembered in the modern covered alley which runs from the upper end of the High Street to the village hall and the back of Budgens. Barry Anscombe had his gun shop in Caudle Street for many years - situated where Al Badar's barbershop was, now a ladies hairdressers - and the Wine Rack used to occupy the premises now occupied by CornerWeighs before relocating to Commercial Buildings.
Caudle Street is a comparatively recent addition to the village street names. It was originally a closed passageway - with a door - which was part of Elm Lodge when that building was an antique dealer's business. The passageway led down to the dealer's yard at the back of the building.
