The cat & canary
The Cat & Canary started life with the coming of the railway to Henfield and was originally built as the Station Hotel. Some years later, with the closing of the line, it was renamed the Cat & Canary in honour of the incident involving Bob Ward's canary (of the present Cat House) and Nathaniel Woodard's cat from Martyn Lodge. As ownerships and tenants changed, it was refurbished again as the Old Railway Tavern, even having a Thai restaurant in one half, until it became the Cat & Canary once again.
In 1891 the licensee was 67-year old widow Mary Tebbutt from Leeds, her 93-year old mother Elizabeth Card, also from Leeds, and her 63-year old brother Henry Card, born in Woolwich. In 1901 the licensee was 42-year old James King.
