canons
In the 1612 will of one Thomas Canon, a house, barns, windmill and land were bequeathed to his daughter Jane. Henry de Candole asks, in The Story of Henfield: "Besides Hollands Lane stands an ancient house called Canons. Was this the house bequeathed by Thomas Canon, and did a windmill then stand on the land 'adjoyning'?"
The house is in the western section of Hollands Lane (the eastern section is muddy and unsuitable for motor vehicles). Turn left off West End Lane into Lawyer's Lane, past Leyspring, and then follow the right turn into Hollands Lane until the lane becomes a footpath. Canon's is on your right. The 1841 occupants of the house were 50-year old agricultural labourer George Nye and his family, and 45-year old agricultural labourer George Batchelor and his family. In 1891, "Cannons" was occupied by two families: 42-year old coal merchants labourer David Dowling, wife Matilda and their nine children; 71-year old labourer Stephen Woolgar and his wife Harriett. In 1901 David Dowling - listed as "Dowlen" was still there, and so was Stephen Woolgar, alas, now widowed.
The Rigby family lived here from the 1970s, (my son was taught by Mrs. Rigby at St. Peter's school).
