Cagefoot Lane - PARK WALK
The popular view is that Cagefoot Lane, known for a time as Park Walk, took its name - as "Catchfoot Lane", perhaps - from the village pillory and stocks which stood on the west side of the High Street, across from the forge. On the south side, running from the High Street was a field used for fairs and, until quite recently, allotments. There was a ropewalk running down the south side in the 19th century, owned by a Richard Morley. In the early years of the 20th century, the Grey House, which stands next to the Henfield Club on the north side, was a private school run by Mr. & Mrs. Prince. Dr. H.F. Squire set up a nursing home at Haycroft in the 1930s. The most prominent building in the lane - where it joins the High Street on the north side - is Claremont Villa, now the Henfield Club. In the late 19th century, this was the only building in the lane.
