HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

Blundens

Blundens is an old farm at the end of Stonepit Lane - close to Amy's Cottage and Lashmars Hall. In 1841 the occupant of Blundens was 35-year old agricultural labourer John Dowler. John Cutress was the farmer in 1881, and his brother William farmed Lancasters. Also listed as living at Blundens in 1881 - probably in labourers' accommodation - was agricultural labourer Mark Dowler and his wife and five children. In 1871 William Cutress and his family lived at Blundens. Also listed at Blundens were 37-year old farmer Thomas Warden and his family - and 42-year old Mark Dowler and his family. In 1891 the house was occupied by 37-year old labourer Philip Knight, wife Harriett and their four sons. Also in the house was roadsman Samuel Knight, a widower. His age appears to be 71 (the census is unclear), so perhaps he was Philip's father.
