assembly rooms
The Assembly Rooms building was erected in 1885 under the aegis of the Henfield Assembly Rooms Company. It was used for functions such as Masonic meetings, housed the village library for a spell and was home to societies, concerts, meetings, plays and council offices. It fulfilled these functions until the present village hall was built in 1974, and the rooms were taken over by businesses such as Tobitts - who sold boots and shoes there. In 1891, the Hall Keeper was 36-year old bricklayer Samuel Reeves, with his wife Elizabeth and their four daughters.
