HENFIELD THEN AND NOW

ANSTY House/pump house

Ansty House stands on the corner of the High Street and Park Road, with Alan Woodward's butchers on its southern side. The building has housed various business over the years, including an optician's, a nail bar, a boutique and a greengrocer's. In 1891, as "Anstey Villas", it was home to three separate businesses. 61-year old George Heasman probably occupied the present premises of Jeremy's - if the census order is anything to go by - and he was a baker, pastry cook and confectioner. Then there was 54-year old labourer James Silsby, wife Fanny and their two children. Finally - perhaps where Cinders boutique is now - there was a butcher's assistant called Henry Martin and his family, plus a lodger called Susannah Stevens.

For a period of time, the left-hand side of the building was named Pump House.

SHOPS 3

Henfield Optical: A typical photograph from the 2000s, with Henfield Optical, the optician's business, on the left-hand (northern side) and a hair salon/nail bar on the right-hand side. This side of the house has also been known as Pump House

Partners Nail Bar: In this photo, Partner's Nail Bar was still doing business where Jeremy's is now.

Ansty House: The northern end of Ansty House now houses Cinders Boutique.

Jeremy's: This photograph was taken in October 2016. Jeremy's the greengrocer's had moved into the northern end of Ansty House in place of the nail bar. The old front door has been permanently closed, and the entrance to the shop is in Park Road.
