F.F. ALEY
For many years F.F. Aley occupied two old buildings which were demolished and replaced by what is now Sustainables4U and White Mischief. In 1901, if the census order is logical, the southernmost half - on the right in the picture - was occupied by 30-year old farm labourer Edwin Smith and his family. The left-hand half was occupied by 37-year old market garden labourer George Sayers and family.
The name Aley lingered on in the new building before it was occupied by White Mischief. It was the Henfield branch of an electrical goods shop in Steyning called Johnson's. The firm tried valiantly to match prices set by other retailers but, in the end, were defeated by the rise of the internet and cheaper online shopping. Aley's went first and then Johnson's some months later.
