FURNERS LANE HOUSES
Hundreds of years ago, Furners Lane was a track - the main track to Blackstone from Henfield - and there are several interesting houses along the way. The lane is metalled as far as Bylsborough Barn, where a gate and stile halt the motor car, and a green lane wanders along to the Blackstone road.
HOUSES 8
Turnhams Gill: This is a house built in the 1980s. I wandered around it when it had just been built and peered in through the windows. At that time it was possible to walk in, through and around Gill Orchard and the surrounding fields. Since then the house has been added on to, gated and walled off from general view.
Little Bylsborough: I couldn't resist including Little Bylsborough in the site. The roof was re-thatched a few years ago with reeds from Eastern Europe - cheaper, apparently, than using English reed - and has matured well. A Suffolk reed-cutter told me in May 2005 that only 17% or 18% of thatching reeds are now cut in this country. The house is off Furners Lane, just across from big brother Bylsborough.
